Open and laparoscopic hiatal hernia repairs
Patients with harsh gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and patients with in-carcerated hiatal hernias can be treated by minimally invasive surgery. Laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair with Nissen fundoplication is considered the treatment of choice. Experiences at our institution are mostly with open procedures. The benefits of laparoscopic approach were a shorter postoperative hospital stay, less pain and earlier mobilization with a better cosmetic effect. Procedures lasted longer. Complications noted during follow up are a reminder of the necessity for thorough preop- erative investigation of suitable candidates for the procedure. Also, due to the learning curve, the surgical experience is one of the predictive factors for a satisfactory outcome.
