In the Footsteps of St. Jerome: Dalmatian Humanists on their Renaissance of Letters
The fifteenth century witnessed the emergence of the Dalmatian branch of the Republic of Letters. Confronted with the Venetian claims of political and cultural superiority and an existential threat from the Ottoman Turks, Dalmatian humanists responded with their own narratives in which they put forward the past and present glories of their cities and their nation. This paper analyzes two chorographies written to this end: the De situ Illyriae et civitate Sibenici (1487) of Juraj Šižgorić of Šibenik and the Oratio de origine successibusque Slavorum (1532) of Vinko Pribojević of Hvar. It shows that though both authors lamented the hard times that befell their nation, they accepted the humanist idea of the renaissance of letters and they celebrated the modern-day viri illustres who followed in the footsteps of their national patron saint, the learned St. Jerome.
