Setting Grounds for Data Literacy in the Sector of Agriculture: Learning About and with Open Data
Aiming to assess the characteristics of data literacy (DL) set for the agricultural sector through formal education and the open data (OD) presence in education, we have offered an approach for landscaping DL components provided through formal education. ECTS catalogue of undergraduate (BS) and graduate (MS) study programmes, interviews and course materials were subjected to qualitative thematic analysis mapping onto the themes in two levels of the adapted ODI Data Skills Framework expanding the term “skill” to “competence”. Early adopters implementing and teaching OD concepts were found only exceptionally through the interviews. Technical competencies required to combine domain knowledge with DL were dominant at the MS level. A balanced, but limited DL structure was found at the BS level. Including DL in formal education with notion of soft competencies through existing frameworks and strategies would bring momentum to transition, innovation and value creation from data in agriculture sector.
