Mixed-methods approach in action research: challenges and possibilites in higher education
Modern teacher education programs should train future teachers for the roles of reflective practitioners and action researchers who will continuously explore ways to improve their practice in the institutions they work, thus creating changes that will contribute to improving the educational system from the inside out. Here, action research can be an effective tool for teachers’ professional development and improvement of pedagogical theory and practice. Modern methodological approaches point to the importance of combining quantitative and qualitative methods in research to achieve a more credible and comprehensive understanding of the results obtained. Therefore, this paper highlights the challenges and possibilities that mixed-methods approach can provide in action research in higher education. A possible study aimed at raising awareness of appropriate language behavior in electronic discourse will serve us to give guidelines on how to create a mixed methods action research project involving teacher education students.
