VOICE for every child – Initiatives and support

Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) symbols are spoken, graphic, or manual representations of ideas, feelings, objects, actions, people, relationships, and events. Symbols can be represented by photographs, pictures, or illustrations and are categorised by word types or topics. Successful implementation of an AAC system in a community will involve as many stakeholders as possible. Each will have a role to play in parts of the supply chain and ecosystem. It is helpful at this stage to figure out how to reach and engage each stakeholder. When developing training for professionals, participants are likely to have different backgrounds and perspectives on child development and AAC knowledge. Therefore, the content of the training should not be too specific (e.g., an occupational therapist may not know how to assess communication skills as well as a teacher). Alternatively, professionals can be divided into groups based on their background (e.g., specialist teachers and speech therapists as one group). Participants need a certain level of technical competence, and experience shows that common skills in using computers and tablet devices are needed. The project team should provide technical expertise to all stakeholders involved. It is important to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and honesty in the project. In addition, core team members and other training participants with lower levels of digital technology skills should be made aware that the training is tailored to basic technical skills, but that participants can seek additional technical support if needed
