On The Invariants Of Orthotropic Elastic Constants
Wood and plywood belong to the oldest and most common orthotropic materials used in engineering. Here belong many natural crystals and rolled metals. Though, the orthotropy of rolled metals is not highly pronounced. Recently many orthotropic composite materials have been produced and encreasingly used in many applications especially in aircrafts, rockets, civil structures, naval architecture for surface ships and submarines in rail vehicles, trucks, biomechanics and many other fields. Such composite materials are e.g. glass-fiber reinforced plastics, metal fiber reinforced materials, fillers in sandwich constructions etc. Such structures are predominately thin-walled structures composed mainly of plates and shells In these structures there exists plane state of stress. Therefore generalized Hookes law for plane state of stress is generally discussed in textbooks and other relevant literature. The generalized Hookes law for the three-dimensional state of stress in terms of engineering orthotropic elastic constants is proposed. Some invariants of the fourth order elasticity tensor in terms of engineering constants are considered.
