Graph Theory Approach for the Optimisation of Biomass Supply Network – Case Study for the Urban Areas
Biogas from anaerobic systems integrates the production of renewable energy, waste management and waste treatment, as well as biofertilizer production. One of the biggest barriers to increased waste biomass utilization in energy supply is the cost of the respective biomass supply network and technologies to convert biomass into useful forms of energy. To address this barrier, this paper presents a p-graph approach for the optimisation of biomass supply networks of biowaste which occur in restaurants, shops, food and beverage industry, whose objective is to determine economically optimal and sub-optimal residual biomass networks for biogas production, that meets greenhouse emission saving targets. The model is based on a graph theory approach and is able to take into consideration the seasonality of available biomass, biomass upstream cost and biomass processing cost (biogas production). In addition, the model considers as eligible only solutions which compile with the requirements given by Directive 2018/2001 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources- 80% of greenhouse gas reduction for the biogas plants in operation from 2026 and environmental sustainability criteria. The model is developed and solved in P-Graph Studio, while the availability of feedstocks and transportation distance is defined with the GIS tool. This approach is tested in the case study for the urban area. This research is expected to be beneficial to decision-makers and biogas plant operators in the development of the biogas industry.
