TECHNICAL STUDY OF THE LATE 19th CENTURY CREDENZA
The credenza is part of the art collection donated to the Art and Restoration Department of the University of Dubrovnik by the late Mrs. Kate Lubaj, an art connoisseur and philanthrope from Dubrovnik. It is a wooden historicism credenza from the last decade of the 19th century consisting of a lower commode with the granite stone slab on top and upper showcases for storage and exhibition all together forming a credenza. It has the attributes of the Neo-Renaissance style popular in the German-influenced parts of Europe deriving from one of the Austro-Hungarian furniture productions and shipped to Dubrovnik with Lloyd’s steamships from the Trieste port. Context of the political circumstances, philosophical movements in the 19th century, and the expedite development of industrial production generated not the only revival of historical style but also technical features and possibilities that marked the beginning of the mass production era. The poster represents technical and a stylistic study of this furniture piece followed by detailed drawings of the object and has not only cognitional and documentary value but also can be used as a base for the reconstruction of any element of the credenza in the future.
