The Improvement of Socks Dimensional Stability Assessment Methodology
Socks are knitted garment articles that cover the feet, ankles and part of the legs calf. They have to retain the usage quality, especially dimensional stability after repeated washing and drying cycles, since their appropriate size and extensible knitted structure ensures improved fit. Studies concerning sock dimensional stability are very few. Since here is not any European standardised procedure intended for sock dimensional stability determination, the standards EN ISO 3759 and EN ISO 5077 were applied. According to the proposed methodology, the changes in socks length and width dimensions were determined by measuring of precisely defined distances in the foot and the leg parts of dray relaxed, and wet relaxed socks after five repeated washing and drying cycles (performed according to the EN ISO 6330). Additionally, fixed load method performed with PC controlled strength tester and specially adapted clamps was used to determine the changes in the socks elongation, for both lengthwise and widthwise directions. In this paper three groups of calf length cotton socks, made in the highest percent of single ring spun yarns in full plating by textured polyamide 6.6 yarns of different linear density were tested. The influence of different yarn combinations in socks, produced under the same conditions, and their physical properties on the obtained results were evaluated. The proposed methodology provided vital information in observed dimensional and elongation changes, which indicate that despite the shrinkage after the simulation of domestic care, the socks will extend more on the wearer feet.
