Kitsh ‒ Students' Attitudes, Assessments and Opinions
Kitsch is a phenomenon of mass culture that flourished during the era of industrialization. Today, kitsch can be found in various forms of art and many aspects of everyday life. This paper examines students' attitudes, assessments, and opinions about kitsch. A total of 320 students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Croatia (faculties in Zagreb, Split, and Zadar) participated in the research. The average age of the participants was 23 years, and the majority of the sample were women (91.6%). An analysis of the collected data on students' awareness and knowledge about kitsch, and their interests and attitudes towards this topic shows that students' level of knowledge about kitsch is moderate. According to the research results, students who visit art galleries and museums more often are better acquainted with the concept of kitsch. There is also a difference in knowledge between younger and older students, where the latter show higher level of knowledge. The lowest level of interest and the least positive attitudes are expressed by students of Pedagogy, while the students with the highest level of interest and awareness are those who occasionally visit museums and galleries.
