Mechanochemistry for clean and rapid synthesis and transformation of functional MOFs
Here we present how mechanochemical reactions, i.e. reactions between solid reactants induced by mechanical force, can be used for a rapid, sustainable, and controllable transformation of environmentally safe precursors into relevant MOFs, [1] such as MOF-74[2] or zirconium MOFs of UiO, [3] NU- [4], and PCN-[5] families. Direct monitoring by synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction revealed that the mechanochemical formation of MOFs often proceeds through intermediate phases, most of which are inaccessible from solution procedures. It is possible to isolate and use these intermediates for the templated synthesis of non-conventional MOFs, such as various bimetallic MOF-74 materials[6] or MOF amorphs with interesting magnetic properties and strong potential for new catalytic reactivity.[7] Besides their multi-metal and amorphous derivatives, mechanochemical methods can be used for the controllable introduction of other functional nano-guests in the voids of the MOF by using only a catalytic amount of liquids, [8] thus providing access to MOF hybrids for different purposes.
