Teaching language skills in LSP
In its essence, teaching of the skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking in LSP does not differ from teaching these skills in general foreign language. The difference between teaching the language skills in a specialised and in a general language, however, lies in the fact that in a specialised language the focus may be on different skills and that the starting point of teaching the skills in a specialised language are particular pre-service and in-service needs of learners. The paper will focus on objectives of using particular materials (audio-visual or written) and the criteria for selecting the materials in LSP teaching. Examples of pre-, while- and post-reading and listening activities, speaking activities as well as guided, semi-guided and free writing activities that can be used in LSP teaching will be presented. In addition, the response and the experiences of the participants in the TRAILs Summer/Winter School organised for LSP teachers and language students regarding the teaching of the receptive and productive skills in LSP will be described.
