The Concepts of Brotherhood and Friendship in Dubrovnik`s Late Medieval Diplomatic Practice

Historians paid a lot of attention to the Ragusan diplomatic methods and techniques, but the concepts of 'brotherhood' and 'friendship' that underpinned the political relations were mainly neglected. To fill that research gap this talk focuses on analyzing the following questions: what type of relationship was appropriate to refer to as 'friendship' and 'brotherhood' in the diplomatic sphere ; what these terms actually mean and what is meant to be accomplished by using them in a particular situation ; under what circumstances such defined relationships functioned smoothly, or could be shaken, broken, and even re-established ; what lexemes, rhetorical figures, and expressions are associated with those concepts ; and finally, to what extent the late medieval concepts of brotherhood and friendship expressed in Ragusan diplomatic sources corresponds with recognizable rhetorical figures, practices, and traditions that are characteristic for the wider area of Central Europe and the Mediterranean, beginning with the classical Greek and Roman periods and continuing through the Renaissance. To ensure the stability of the ruling elite, prosperity, and a bright future for the community, the city councilors used the concepts of friendship and brotherhood, as well as related emotions such as love, and ethical values such as loyalty and trust, as important base pillars for the realization of desired goals. The concepts of brotherhood and friendship proved to be important in the creation of military alliances, but also in the signing peace treaties and the elimination of tension, fear and crisis in mutual relationships. Friendships built on religious, ethnic and professional solidarity, as well as those based on geographical proximity, oriented towards solving practical everyday problems, are particularly important for this study. Friendship networks formed by the Ragusan authorities and other autonomous political entities, city political leaders and their entrusted representatives, as well as interpersonal friendships established by Ragusan ambassadors between themselves, with other Ragusan citizens and powerful persons they`ve met on their travels, including women and members of other religious groups are of particular interest. Consequently, the concepts of brotherhood and friendship are approached both horizontally and vertically, institutionally and individually, publicly and privately. Furthermore, the analysis includes confirmations of friendship visible at various ritual acts such as mutual gift-giving, hospitality, body postures and exchanged kisses. The actualization of the lexemes of friendship and brotherhood, as well as the obligations that arise from them, must be studied in the context in which they occur. As a result, the strategic and tactical calculations underlying the concept's application can be examined as well. Emotions, obligations, virtues, and pragmatic needs were all important components of late medieval world. The concepts of friendship and brotherhood united ethical, moral, social, political, cultural, religious and legal elements at the inter- institutional and individual level, making them particularly interesting and useful in understanding wider phenomena and processes. This presentation offers a small step in that direction.
