Evaluation of mating disruption for box tree moth area-wide control programs

Abstract: We report the results from two years of field testing in 2021 and 2022 of an experimental mating disruption (MD) product for possible use in an operational control program to eradicate or slow the spread of BTM in the United States. The product was developed by TRECE* based on their CideTraktm meso-dispenser system, a solid rubberized plastic dispenser based on the major pheromone component for BTM (Z11-16:Ald) and was tested in a 70-ha trial in Croatia in 2021 and 2022. The results of the first trial were promising showing 99% trap “shutdown” and BTM larval reductions by as much as 75% in treatment compared to control plots. Year 2 results were similar to the trial in 2021, with high levels of reductions in moth capture on pheromone traps and reductions in BTM larval density in treatment plots compared to control plots. Dispensers placed at the rate or 50/ha and 80/ha achieved similarly high rates of trap shutdown which suggests that the lower rate of dispenser placement would be effective. A field study of 4 experimental female lures identified two lure formulations that are highly attractive both female and male BTM in MD treated fields which will be useful for monitoring under conditions of mating disruption. To learn how to make use of this product to control BTM in landscape gardens, there are several questions that need to be answer including: 1) From how far away do mated females travel and how will this influence using MD for BTM control in for landscape garden treatments? ; 2) What is the minimum effective MD treated plot size? ; 3) and from what distance from other BTM infested boxwood are treated areas isolated enough so that they are protected? In 2023, we are proposing to conduct an operational trial in Niagara County, NY to assess the potential for MD and Btk treatments as part of an area-wide suppression program. Distribution of BTM in Niagara County Phenology suggests discrete locations where we could set up an operational trial with MD as primary tool Adding the use of an MD tool will make the initiation of an effective BTM eradication and slow the spread strategy more feasible in the United States and will also be a valuable tool to protect boxwood nursery production.
