The Role of University in the Development of Shipping Industry, Education and Training of Seafarers
The Croatian Ministry of Science and Technology has approved a scientific project to the Faculty of Maritime Studies, a member of the University of Rijeka. The project title is: ‘ The Applicability of Propulsion Units with Reference to Energy, Safety, Ecology and Maintenance Costs’ . The project is a follow-up of the two previous ones, being: ‘ The Impact of the Environmental Requirements to Shipboard Power Plants’ and ‘ Optimum Energy Consumption Models in Shipyards’ . The paper deals with the joint role of a scientific and research institution and the shipping industry towards an enhanced education, improved training and upgraded personal creativity. All the three objectives aim at meeting the ever growing requirements of the shipping industry. The main scientific and research objectives of the project entitled ‘ The Applicability of Propulsion Plants with Reference to Energy, Safety, Ecology and Maintenance Costs' are to present the state-of-art of actual propulsion plants on board, taking into consideration all the development results and achievements and eventually, to indicate the development trends of shipboard propulsion and power systems. The basic purpose of the research is to establish some reliable factors for the selection of a propulsion unit, taking into consideration environmental protection, navigational safety and running costs. Next, the project should indicate a possible development projection of various shipboard system elements. The end users of the project outcome should be: owners when deciding to purchase newbuildings or in planning major conversions ; shipyards to adapt to new trends and respond to them timely ; law makers to harmonise maritime regulations to safety standards of personnel, property and cargo at sea as well as to preserve the environment ; environment protection organisations as a scientific basis for their objectives ; and eventually to universities in order to make use of the project achievements in education and training of their students.
