Backpacker tourism: an analysis of motives for backpacking

Backpackers' consumer behaviour is not enough explored area, so there is the potential for developing this tourism niche. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the motives of young backpackers and to determine whether there is a difference in motives depending on the specific characteristics of the respondents. The differences between the different travelers’ segments were defined based on the variance analysis. Results discover an interesting insight into the profile and motives of the backpacker. Despite the similarities among the respondents - young, middle-class and well educated, backpackers are a heterogeneous group with different motives, attitudes, activities and reactions to the concept of backpacker. Backpackers have a strong sense of "wanderlust" or curiosity about the world. Compared to other forms of traveling, backpacking is closely linked to idea of authenticity, going out of the usual touristic routes and discovering the world.
