Evaluation of traps, pheromone lure dose, and female attractants for box tree moth detection.

Objective of experiments was to conduct field trials in urban areas of Split – Dalmatia County in Croatia to evaluate which trap and lure combinations are most effective for detection and delimitation purposes. Lure evaluation study: Four different lure loading rates of the two component lure in a 5 to 1 ratio were evaluated with the goal will be to determine which lure loading rate is the most sensitive for detection. Two experiments were set with two trap types: large plastic orange delta trap (TRACE) and green Unitrap (TRACE). During 2021. year, large plastic orange delta trap loaded with 1, 6, 9 or 10 mg pheromone lure were evaluated on three urban locations Sinj, Brnaze and Poljica). Results shows that even 6 and 10 mg attract more BTM male moths, still there was no statistical significant difference between 4 lure formulations. During 2022. year, Green Unitrap traps were loaded with 1, 3 , 6 or 9 mg pheromone lure were evaluated on urban locations in the coastal area in municipalities of Trogir and Seget. The goal of this was to determine and optimize which lure loading rate is the most sensitive for detection. Lure efficacy study shows that 3 and 6 mg attract more BTM male moths when used with Green Unitrap. Female experimental lure study: Four different lure treatments (TRE 2680, TRE 2681, TRE 2638 and TRE 2639) were assessed with Green Unitrap traps during 2022. Year in urban area of municipalities of Brnaze and Turjaci in inland area. Assessments of experimental female lure shows promising progress in development of female targeted trapping activities where all tested formulations attract BTM females (and some BTM males). Trap type evaluation study: During 2021. Year, three trap types for BTM detection sensitivity all baited with 1 mg lure (TRACE) were assessed: Multi-trap (bucket type trap yellow top and white bottom), large plastic delta trap (orange color) with removable inserts and paper disposal delta trap with three side sticky surfaces. Experiments were set up in 8 replications (3 replications at Seget site and 5 replications at Trogir site). Results of the three types of traps testing clearly shows that Multi trap is significantly most attractive trap type in BTM males captures. During 2022. Year, four trap types for BTM detection sensitivity all baited with 3 mg lure (TRACE) were assessed: Multi-trap (bucket type trap yellow top and white bottom), large plastic delta trap with openings cut into the sides with removable inserts, paper wing trap and green paper carton trap used for trapping of gypsy moth. Results of the 4 types of traps testing clearly shows that Multi trap (green-yellow top and white bottom) (bucket type) is significantly most attractive trap type in BTM males captures. Conclusions: Overall results of the several lure evaluation study and trap type study shows that Unitrap trap types (Multi trap or Unitrap both fully green or yellow-white color) are significantly most attractive trap type in BTM males captures. Regarding amount of pheromone lure loads, the optimized rate varies between 3-6 mg per trap. Assessments of experimental female lure shows promising progress in development of female targeted trapping activities.
