Northern Adriatic Islands as Bearers of Roman Culture and Identity Between Sixth and Ninth Centuries
The goal of this paper is to provide some insights into positioning of the islands of the Northern Adriatic (Krk, Rab, Cres, Lošinj), which are presumed to be under the jurisdiction of Late Antique bishoprics of Curricum, Arba and Apsorus, within the networks of Byzantine interests of this era. More precisely, it will try to reinterpret the image of the local elites and their transformations based on chosen case studies within this established framework. The cultural, religious and political affiliations of the local elites will be viewed mostly through their investments in architecture and other forms of art as the lack of written sources prompted the use of mostly material evidence for this specific area. Through comparisons with available materials from neighboring regions (the rest of Dalmatia as well as Regio Venetia and Histria) the local elites of Northern Adriatic islands will thus be included into their wider social context, as the main actors in preserving the transformed local romanitas, shaped by particular historical circumstances of this period.
