Sažetak
Wood is the material that is widely used indoors because of its natural features: colour and texture. Unfortunately wood is photochemically unstable substrate which changes colour even in indoor diffuse light conditions as a result of lignin photooxidation. Although the photoinduced discoloration of wood can add to an impression of age, for most applications discoloration is regarded as an unfavourable reaction. Clear coatings, which enhance the natural beauty of wood, offer limited protection to wood regards to discolouration unless they are not stabilised by appropriate types and amounts of light stabilizers. In this work we wanted to establish colour change on oak wood, ash wood, maple wood, beech wood, cherry wood and birch wood uncoated and exposed to UV exposure filtered through window glass and colour changes on same wood species exposed to the same irradiation but coated with commercial transparent coatings for parquetry and furniture. More severe colour changes were measured on maple and ash wood samples both uncoated and coated with transparent varnishes. All used varnishes proved inefficacious in colour stabilisation of pale wood species.
