The effect of speed reduction on the environmental performance of a containership

Since ships are more fuel efficient when sailing at reduced speed, slow steaming has become a valuable practice to decrease fuel costs in times when market is sluggish. Lately, this practice has become very popular due to environmental concerns as it allows the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions without additional infrastructure. However, slow steaming leads to a longer transportation time, which then raises the need for the engagement of additional ships if the yearly transport work is kept constant. The ship encounters different sea states along its sailing route, which significantly affect fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions and consequently impact on the benefits that come from slow steaming. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to determine the benefits of slow steaming in realistic sailing conditions. The benefits of slow steaming are estimated for a Post Panamax Containership sailing along one of the most common containership trading routes. It has been demonstrated that month significantly affects the benefits of slow steaming. The reduction in fuel consumption significantly differs along the sailing route, highlighting the importance of accurate assessment of sea states along the sailing route.
