Art and Social Angency in a State of (Post)Transition
This paper presents two participatory artworks that bear characteristics of the social turn in their attempt to capture multiple changed realities in the social fabric that have emerged from the Croatian (post)transitional landscape fraught with political and economic mismanagement and malpractices, which have left many people uncertain of their future wellbeing and possessing skill sets that have rarely been adapted to the new circumstances. The first is Ana Horvat’s Re:member is an interactive audio-visual installation, which was created as part of the project Tailored Futures, organised and presented through display at Zagreb’s Nikola Tesla Technical Museum and the second is Kristina Leko’s How people live – A Report on Passivity is an art work organised in a form of exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb. By drawing on participatory art and (socio)museological theory, the two works have been explored through the notion of social agency in relation to (post)transitional socioeconomic issues in Croatia. The public status of the museums has been seen as valuable in providing the participating communities with a platform for the enactment of their social agency, such as empowering them for making a change and helping them claim recognition.
