Roman ports in the area of Zadar (Croatia)
The area around the city of Zadar in Croatia contains several Roman ports. Due to systematic archaeological research these ports can be divided into different categories. Typical Roman city port is the port of Zaton near Roman city of Aenona. The port that serves several Roman cities situated far from the coast is the Roman port in Pakostane. The port of Caska on the island of Pag and the port in Sukosan represent ports that belonged to Roman villas. In addition to these, ports belonging to specialized workshops have been preserved in Zadar area, as well as several ports used for the export of stone from Roman quarries and a port belonging to a Roman pottery workshop. Finally, when Roman ports from the classical period ceased to exist, late Roman ports in Novalja on the island of Pag and on the island of Silba were established.
