Surface potentials and processes at the mineral/aqueous electrolyte surfaces

Mineral/aqueous electrolyte interfaces play an important role in the environment and technology. The chemical properties of minerals, as well as the composition of aqueous medium determine the processes at the surfaces. In the case of chemically nonreactive materials, surface processes may be simple and involve only the distribution of potential determining ions between the interface and the bulk of the solution. However, at the metal oxide surfaces the surface complexation [1] and adsorption of ions and molecules take place. In some cases, dissolution / crystal growth, surface transformation and degradation/corrosion may occur. The processes that occur before and during the establishment of a surface equilibrium are explored using the different experimental and computational techniques. We measured the inner by means of mineral single crystal electrode (SCrE) and electrokinetic zeta potentials obtained via electrophoresis and streaming potential measurements (SP). The interplay of surface dissolution and surface transformation with the reactions of active surface sites and distribution of ions between the interfacial region and the bulk of the solution will be discussed. Different solid surface are considered an example of the insoluble oxide (TiO2) [3], an example of the semi- soluble mineral (SiO2) [4] and an example of the soluble mineral (CaF2) [5].
