Municipal Waste Water Treatment in Bioreactor with Submerged membrane
Aerobic treatment of municipal waste water in a bioreactor with submerged hollow fibre membrane driven by vacuum was studied. Three start-up periods of two weeks each were observed as well as two months continuos work of the plant. Activated sludge from a full size municipal waste water treatment plant was used as inoculum. Efficiency of COD removal was 95% and it remained very stable during the whole experiment. The period required for the occurrence of nitrification process was dependent on initial inoculum concentration. After the start-up nitrification was stable and complete with only traces of ammonia and nitrite in effluent. The growth rate of the biomass in bioreactor estimated as mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) depended on the initial MLSS concentration. The MLSS stabilised gradually on 9 g L_-1, which corresponded with 0.14 g COD g_-1 MLSS d_-1 feed to microorganism ratio (F/M). Membrane performance was investigated on different water fluxes and significant influence of air bubbling on prevention of fouling was confirmed.
