The Croatian-Slavonian Aristocracy in the Local Politics During the Eighteenth Century
With increased requirements for vocational training for all public officers during the 18th century the aristocracy in Croatia-Slavonia had to adapt to new qualification criteria set by the Court of Vienna. The aristocracy was eager to comply with the new rules of public engagement. Most aristocrats that responded to the new criteria in education or traineeships assumed influential positions in Croatia-Slavonia. However, this could not guarantee them successful careers in public service. Rather, loyalty to the Crown, eagerness to engage in the Crown’s interest and a good recommendation were perhaps more important factors for the success of individual careers. The challenge aristocrats faced then was to compete with the (mostly lower) nobility, who had proved more willing to comply with the Court’s wishes and therefore gained the privilege of accessing higher politics.
