Province of Liburnia and the border with Italia in the time of Emperor Marcus Aurelius
The career of Lucius Artorius Castus was reconstructed on the basis of two sepulchral inscriptions from the village of Podstrana (on the territory of roman Salona). Artorius' last duty as procurator centenarius provinciae Liburniae was chronologically fixed during the Germanic wars of Marcus Aurelius on the basis of the general historical context and the date when his sarcophagus was manufactured. The temporary secession of Liburnia from the province of Dalmatia coincided with status changes of other provinces (Raetia, Noricum, Dacia) in the Danube-Adriatic area due to the war situation. Artorius' exceptional position is in line with the time when the equestrian class broke through social barriers and achieve some senatorial powers. That is when the praetentura Italiae et Alpium was created, whose headquarter is the principia in Tarsatica (today's Rijeka). Based on the above, the border of Italy at that time is determined.
