Some Consequences of Secondary Forest Roads Construction in Mountainous Area
The timber skidding in the mountainous conditions of the Republic of Croatia is done on the ground by skidders which cannot enter the forest unless there is a network of secondary forest roads. Due to rough terrain conditions, a secondary forest road most frequently has to be constructed (a strip road). In this paper we have researched negative consequences of constructing the secondary forest roads in uneven-aged forests of the Republic of Croatia with the particular emphasis on damaging the remaining standing trees in a forest stand. A strip road was made by an excavator Caterpillar 325 equipped with a pick-up hammer. The paper analyses in details damages of the stripped bark according to their shape, dimensions and a place of damage, with the research on the mutual dependence of the frequency and damage intensity on: the distance of damaged trees from the strip road, transverse inclination of the terrain and the building category of the material.
