The new weld crater crack test
The evolution of high-strength aluminium alloys has made possible their significant application in large constructions, especially in shipbuilding industry. Many components of these constructions are welded. These constructions (as ship hull, ship superstructure, etc.) are dynamically loaded, so during their design and manufacturing special attention has to be paid to dynamic strength of welded joints. There are many data about fatigue properties of high-strength shipbuilding aluminium alloys in the literature. Usually published data refer to mechanical properties of welded joints without defects, which is not sufficient for practical design. This fact is leading to the necessity of fatigue behaviour study of welded joints with welding cracks. The various types of welding defects are presented in the case of real constructions. The special attention has to be paid to appearance of crater hot-cracks. This work treats the new method of forming crater hot-cracks in welded joints on small specimens from 5083 aluminium alloys.
