Hrvatski mučenici za vjeru i dom

The Battle at Krbavsko polje took place on September 9, 1493 and is known of its victims that counted more than ten thousand Croatian knigths and soldiers either killed in action or arrested. Among arrested ones was Croatian ban (Vice-Roy), so its outcome badly affected not only Croatian Kingdom but Croatian people as well. After the Battle Turks were more encouraged to devastate and conquer Croatian territory, "reliquias reliquiarum olim inclyti Regni Croatiae - the remains of the remains of the famous Croatian Kingdom of the time." These days, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Battle, an idea occured to build the Church for Croatian martyrs on the very place of horrible tragedy of Croatian people in token of gratitude for those who lived, worked and sacrified their blood and lives for their Croatian Homeland. Therefore, the Church Croatian martyrs will be devoted to all those saints and blessed who were given a public respect by the Church, and its crypt will keep memory on Croatian citizens, but also the members of other nations, who sacrified their lives for Croatian Homeland. The central celebration will take place on incoming September 9, 2005, when the stone which has been taken from the fundamentals of the old Cathedral from Krbava, ruined by the Turks, will be laid for the new one. The stone has been blessed by Pope John Paul II during his pastoral visit to Rijeka on June 8, 2003. Therefore, this publication has been prepared for such a solemn day of laying the stone. The celebration will be hosted by Msgr. Mile Bogović, Bishop of Gospić and Senj. I his "pastoral letter" he will reffer to the theology of martrydom, historycal development of veneration of holy martyrs and the reasons why all Croatian people need to participate in construction of this Memorial-Church for Croatian Saints, martyrs and knights, who laid their lives for the glory of our Almighty God and for the freedom of our Homeland. The publication entitled "Hrvatski mučenici za vjeru i dom" (Croatian who suffered martyrs' deaths for Faith and Homeland) offers short curricula of the Saints, the Blessed and God's servants for whom the processes of beatification have been initiated, other martyrs for whom such official procedures of beatification have not been initiated and also curricula of national brave men and heroes who shed their blood for Homeland. It is to mention as well that it was hard to point out the names of all deserved. Also, the article includes "The calendar of Croatian martyrs for Faith and Homeland" as well as the relating literature. Four sermons of two Croatian cardinals and two bishops that were delivered during masses said on commemorations for Croatian martyrs in Croatia and Austria, have been enclosed in an appendiy of the publication ilustrated with more than twenty photographs.
