Collaborative technological development for addressing grand challenges: Opportunities, limitations, and new frameworks
As aforementioned, grand challenges require collaborative efforts and the sharing of knowledge and tools across a variety of actors to deal with non-linear, pervasive problems that implicate multiple criteria of evaluation. The role of academia in this process is highly debated. Academia is urged to promote social and technological progress by bringing new perspectives into the collaboration with industry, government, and citizens [20, 21]. This of course inspires meta-reflections for a better understanding of how research can concretely impact the real world, laying the foundations for several reflections about perspectives on open science, multidisciplinary research, impact measurement, and the need to create and shape rather than only predict the future [22–25]. In this special issue, we tried our best to promote a multidisciplinary view of opportunities, limitations, and new frameworks to explore the nexus between collaborative technological development and grand challenges by welcoming impactful articles from a variety of subjects. Indeed, in a society that is undergoing turbulent changes, technology influences – and is influenced by – economic, political, philosophical, and cultural dynamics [26, 27]. Before introducing each paper, The 8 studies included in this issue vary in context and issues being addressed, offering insights for a rich variety of ideas for future research.
