INVASIVE ALIEN PLANT Parthenocissus quinquefolia (L.) Planchon IN URBAN AREAS OF ZAGREB COUNTY

Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia (L.) Planchon) is a frequent invasive alien perennial vine in Croatia, especially because of its often use in horticulture. The aim of our work was to research its spatial distribution in urban areas of the Zagreb County. Research was conducted during the year 2012 in the all nine towns of the Zagreb County. In 2016, the survey was repeated on the same plots in two oposite towns of the County: Dugo Selo (eastern part of the County) and Samobor (western part of the County), with the intention to detect possible spread of the species. A total of 541 plots (250x250 m2 each) were surveyed, and in 2012 Virginia creeper was found on 199 plots (36.8% of investigate plots). In Ivanić Grad, the species was established on 27 of 73 surveyed plots, in Jastrebarsko on 14 of 48 plots, in Sveti Ivan Zelina on 20 of 44 plots, in Sveta Nedjelja on 3 of 31 plots, in Velika Gorica on 26 of 76 plots, in Vrbovec on 24 of 48 plots, in Zaprešić on 12 of 58 plots, in Dugo Selo on 12 of 54 plots, and in Samobor on 61 of 109 surveyed plots. The analysis of spatial distribution in 2016 showed a significant increase in the areas covered by Virgina creeper in a four-year period: it was recorded in Dugo Selo on 22 plots, and in Samobor on 87 plots. The increase was more significant in urban parts of the towns, and less in the suburban and rural areas, probably due to significant anthropochory.
