Oxidative stress in patients on haemodialysis
Oxidative stress results from an imbalance between oxidant production and antioxidant defense mechanisms and might be an important pathogenetic factor in progression of the disease. Experimental evidence indicate that patients on haemodialysis (HD) are subject to increased oxidative stress. In an attempt to test this hypothesis we examined 78 patients on HD, mean age 56, 3 ± ; ; ; ; ; 13, 2 years, 50 males and 28 females and 28 controls matched for age and gender. Total antioxidant capacity of sera and sera peroxides levels were determined by ANTIOX-CAP and POX-ACT (Tatzber KEG Austria) assays, respectively. Data were analyzed using Student t test comparing the means of patients before versus after HD as well as versus controls. Serum antioxidant capacity as well as level of serum peroxides were lower in patients prior to haemodialysis as compared to the control values, increasing significantly after dialysis to the normal values. On the contrary, uric acid was increased before HD decreasing after the treatment. These findings may indicate that patients on HD suffer from chronic oxidative stress which is probably attenuated during dialysis due to the release of cellular antioxidants in spite of removal of uric acid, which is known to play an important role in oxidative homeostasis during terminal renal insufficiency. Additional investigation is needed to address the mechanism of beneficial effect of HD on oxidative stress
