Research Protocol: Health problems, mental disorders and cross-cultural aspects of developing effective rehabilitation procedures for refugees of the war-affected countries
The research protocol is grounded on the theoretical framework of involuntary migration which emphasizes migration and resettlement as a form of social action and multidimensional process with multifaceted results rather than a passive reaction to events and is conditioned by historically shaped social, economic and political forces both spatially and temporally. Within this general framework, recognizing the need for interdisciplinary approach and cross-cultural studies, the project methodology integrates psychological, psychodynamic and anthropological theories and methods paying particular attention to the relationship between the acculturation process and stress. The elaborated methodology will be used to assess the degree of successful adjustment and integration of refugees as a result of the interrelations between interethnic contact, ethnic identification, multicultural attitudes, psychological adjustment and contextual variables in cross-cultural perspective of six different socio-cultural contexts. The scope of mental health research is particularly aimed at obtaining data on children/parents' perception of their difficulties and problems, problems of adolescent’ s behaviour and defence mechanisms, and identification of risk and protective factors at the level of individual, family and community.
