Potentials and Challanges of the Present. Emergence of Twin Cities along the Danube. Case Study 3 - Ilok, Croatia
The favorable position along the navigable Danube and the fertile soil of Fruška Gora have always been key to the development of Ilok. Within the walls of the medieval historic core are buildings dating from Gothic to modern times. An increasing economic crisis and gradual emigration mark the period from the last quarter of the twentieth century. War devastation and persecution in the 1990s and the traffic isolation of this easternmost settlement in Croatia led to stagnation in development and depopulation. Today, the most significant potential for the successful recovery of the city and its economy is tourism based on the historic city center's high architectural, cultural, and natural values and developed viticulture.
