Urban Transformations and Resilient Housing: the Case of Cvjetno Housing Estate in Zagreb, Croatia

Cvjetno housing estate was planned by Croatian architect Vladimir Antolić in 1939 according to contemporary standards in functionalist architecture and urban planning. Planned as an urban patch, the estate is situated on the southern periphery of the historic city center, near the river Sava. The estate is recognized as a pivotal example of high quality low rise housing of the interwar period. Since the estate was planned for officials, the main housing types included family houses with an associated garden and show a tendency to fulfill a high living standard. During the past eight decades, the housing estate and particular buildings within it, as well as the surrounding area including the space on the banks of the Sava River, testify to a number of changes. Social, technological, political and historic changes and events affected the subsequent transformations of the estate (degrading the original value, according to some authors), but on the other hand, the estate shows a level of resilience to change. The research focuses on the analyses and comparison of transformations and adaptations from technical, social and symbolic perspectives which will give an insight to formulating a typology of changes made to the estate as a whole and provide grounds for its re-evaluation as a resilient and adaptive urban space.
