Technological solutions for utilization of geothermal energy in urban area by exploiting oilfield aquifer

Geothermal energy will certainly be one of the most important renewable energy sources in the future. Unlike other forms of renewable sources (e.g., wind energy, solar energy, wave energy), geothermal energy is a stable energy source, which can cover base loads. This paper determines the possibilities of exploitation of geothermal water from geothermal exploitation field as well as oilfield bottom aquifers for the needs of heating public buildings. The case study was done for the area of the City of Ivanić Grad, Republic of Croatia, where part of the Ivanić oilfield is within the urban area and some oil wells are located in the city center itself. Furthermore, the aim of this paper was to optimize the exploitation of geothermal water and offer technological solutions that will enable the introduction of renewable energy sources in the energy system of the City of Ivanić Grad. Based on technological parameters, four technological variants for energy production were developed. The calculations showed that the variants where the brine is produced from both geothermal field and oilfield bottom aquifer meet the thermal loads of all considered facilities, over a significant period of time. In addition, the paper also analyzes the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by switching from gas boilers to geothermal heating.
