Organic matter content in vineyard and olive orchard soils of Dalmatia

Decreasing trend in content of soil organic matter (SOM) is becoming one of the mayor limiting factors of soil productivity. Intensive agrotechnical practices had resulted in soil degradation in many Mediterranean countries. The aim of the research is to determine the content of SOM in the surface horizons of vineyard and olive orchard soils in Dalmatian region (Croatia). Date were gathered from soil fertilization recommendations from 101 vineyard and 122 olive orchards made at Institute for Adriatic Cops and Karst Reclamation in period of 2011-2022 SOM content was classified in six categories: extremely low content (0-0.5%), very low content (0.6-1%), low content (1.1-2 %), moderate content (2.1-3%), high content (3.1-5%) and very high content (5.1- 10%). Data analysis showed that the SOM content was as follows: 5% of the vineyards had extremely low content, 8% of vineyards and 1% of olive orchards had a very low content, 20% of vineyards and 4% of olive orchards had a low content, 42% of vineyards and 11% olive orchards had moderate content, 23% of vineyards and 55% of olive orchards had high content and 3% of vineyards and 29% of olive orchards had very high content. Vineyards had average SOM content of 2.5% and had significantly lower SOM content in comparison with olive orchards, which had 4.3% average SOM content. Mayor reason for significantly lower SOM content in vineyard soil is more frequent soil tillage which favors higher mineralization rate of SOM.
