Dental Cements

Dental cements have been used in everyday clinical practice for years. They are used for permanent or temporary cementation of fixed prosthetic restorations, as cavity liners and for temporary or permanent fillings. They should have appropriate properties such as biocompatibility, pulp protection, bacteriostatic action, good rheological, esthetic and mechanical properties, adhesion and low solubility. The most known temporary cements are based on zinc oxide. In recent times, temporary composite cements have also emerged. Long-term temporary cements are mostly used for cementing fixed prosthetic restorations retained on implants. Perma- nent cements include conventional cements (zinc phosphate, carboxylate and glass ionomer) and newer composite cements. They are available in a variety of forms, from simple self-adhesive to more complicated ones that require pre-treatment of both the tooth and the restoration. Likewise, there are several ways to polymerize composite cements depending on the type of prosthetic restoration for which they are used. Cements are of extreme importance for the durability of prosthetic restoration as well as the success of restorative procedures, hence knowledge of their properties, composition and method of use is required.
