Does the status of the foot affect the performance of the rélevé in rhythmic Gymnastics?

It has been proven that the quality of feet performance is a significant constituent part of the sports skills in rhythmic gymnastics, and it influences gymnasts‘ success in competitions. The main aim of this study was to determine whether the status of the foot affects the performance of the rélevé height, plantar and dorsal flexion, and the angle of the Achilles tendon in rhythmic gymnasts. Nineteen rhythmic gymnastics competitors participated in the research (mean age of 11.8±2.2 years) and were divided into three groups according to their feet morphology (neutral foot, pronated +1 foot, pronated +2 foot). Besides the foot morphology, we measured maximal plantar and dorsal flexion, as well as the Achilles tendon angle and the height of the rélevé. Results revealed that more than 60% of gymnasts had normal foot morphology, while almost 40% had some degree of pronated foot. Also, ANOVA with posthoc Bonferroni test between the three groups in all variables for the left foot revealed the differences in the rélevé variable between the two groups with pronated feet (p<0.05), where the group with a lower degree of pronation had higher rélevé results. Results suggest that the left foot is maximally loaded in training with the number of repetitions of choreography and its elements, as being right-handed. The pronated left foot of the right-handed gymnasts certainly has a significant impact on the performance of the pivots, possible in all sports that do pivots in choreographies.
