SPECIFICITY OF THE NORTHERN VELEBIT’S SPELEONYMY
Based on archival and research of reference literature, the paper presents a toponymic treatment of the speleonymy of northern Velebit. Special attention is paid to the names formed at the end of the 20th century, when, following the strong interest in speleological research in this area, especially after the discovery of Lukina jama at Hajdučki kukovi in 1992, numerous speleological research was conducted by Slovak and Polish, Hungarian, Belgian, Dutch and Lithuanian speleologists. The results of these researches led to the discovery of hundreds of Velebit pits, which researchers named after their motivational, structural and linguistic features, do not belong to the tradition of Velebit karst geographical nomenclature, local cultural patterns and idioms on which the older Velebit speleonymy was formed.
