From National to Transnational and Back Again: The Current Vernacular Memory of Croatian History
Based on several examples the presentation will view present day usage of Croatian past in the context of building public memory and thus becoming the part of local national, transnational and even pseudo-national identity. The three examples will focus on the material and verbal vernacular memory of Croatian Middle Ages in the cases of mogila in Maksimir Park in Zagreb, presentation of the figure of king Tomislav, and the so called Curse of king Zvonimir. The narrative of “heroic history” in all three cases will be examined in the connection with historical developments of the 20th century Croatia – the path from national settings to transnational ones and eventually back again. Furthermore, with the aim of understanding durability of the national vernacular memory in the omnipresent global mobility (mental of physical) and transnational settings, the presentation will emphasize the Croatian way of communicating the past into the present. This multi-layered analysis will show that local national settings seems to be stronger than ever before, while mnemonic products and practices “grow tired” of transnational.
