The Title of New Donation and its Role in Structuring the Society and Family in the Kingdom of Croatia in the Fourteenth Century
The new policy of the Angevin dynasty basically intended to introduce order into landowning relations by compiling inventories and reasserting royal rights, in some cases it was possible to reconstruct quite clearly how ownership over land/estates defined one’s social standing. One of the aspects was directly linked to the so-called “title of new donation, ” which Croatian medievalists have largely ignored. I will therefore focus on this issue in particular: first of all, by investigating its significance for the formation of social and family relations in the Angevin period, and consequently, in the period that followed: namely, as the title of the new donation makes it quite clear, the crown directly intervened in property relations, altering the social reality and restructuring a network of existing social relations in order to generate a new social layer consisting of its trusted men.
