Ocean literacy and the role of preventive measures in sustainable shipping
The aim of this paper is to highlight the links between ocean literacy and awareness of the importance of preventive measures for sustainable shipping. Over the years, the marine environment has been threatened by various human activities. There is an essential need to protect the marine environment by providing a unique level of protection worldwide. There are many initiatives for sustainable use and protection of the marine environment, such as the Sustainable Development Goals UN 13 Climate Action and 14 Life Below Water. Several international institutions contribute significantly to the sustainable shipping through their role and actions, namely the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). In order to achieve a positive attitude towards the protection of the marine environment, the general population needs to be more ocean literate, especially the population involved in maritime professions. It is important to understand the mutual influence of people on the marine environment and vice versa in order to act sustainably.
