Contribution to road traffic noise wall panel type selection process

This paper presents a systematic review and multi-criterial analysis of noise wall panels used in road traffic noise protection. The analysis was performed on publicly available meta-data collected from secondary sources. Information on acoustic and non-acoustic characteristics, long-term performance, and cradle-to-gate sustainability of noise wall panels made of concrete, metal, wood, and transparent materials were obtained and analysed. This investigation was performed to reduce the uncertainty in design decision-making and therefore support the process of noise wall management by shifting the emphasis from construction costs to the long-term performance and sustainability of the road traffic noise mitigation project. The results showed that when choosing a panel, preference should be given to those made with concrete materials.
