Release of microplastic particles from cotton- polyester fabric in the washing process
The pollution of ecosystems with microplastics is an ecological problem that is currently being discussed intensively on a global level. Textile materials are one of the main sources of microplastic particles, which are released into the environment mainly during washing processes. The amount of microplastic particles released depends mainly on the type and construction of the textile material and the washing parameters. In this research, the amount of released particles from a cotton-polyester fabric was evaluated in the washing process with enhanced mechanical action. The amount of released particles was estimated using the gravimetric method after membrane filtration and characterisation of the filter cake by microscopy and selective staining. The results showed that microparticles in the form of fibres were released during the washing process of the tested fabric. The proportion of released particles of cellulose origin (cotton) is higher than the proportion of polyester particles.
