PRIMJENA FLUORESCENCIJE KLOROFILA U ISTRAŽIVANJIMA UTJECAJA FHB NA OZIMU PŠENICU

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is an important disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) which can affect grain yield and quality as well as the safety of wheat products due to mycotoxin contaminations. Wheat varieties can significantly differ in their susceptibility to FHB. In this study, winter wheat varieties (Golubica, El Nino, Galloper, Tika Taka, Vulkan, and Kraljica) were artificially inoculated with Fusarium graminearum and F. culmorum (1:1) at two experimental locations (Osijek and Tovarnik). Response of tested varieties was analyzed by measurement of chlorophyll a fluorescence rise kinetics and calculation of JIP-test parameters. A difference in overall disease outcome and grain yield among varieties was observed. Changes in PSII photochemistry and electron transport were detected during the course of infection, but measured parameters were under the strong impact of environmental conditions thus limiting the applicability of chlorophyll fluorescence measurement in field conditions as an indicator of the degree of FHB resistance. However, it allowed early detection of the infection since changes in chlorophyll a fluorescence, especially the occurrence of the positive L-band, could be observed before any of the visible disease symptoms occurred. Therefore, although this fast and non-invasive technique might be more useful in experiments in controlled conditions, it can also be practically implemented and used, along with other methodological approaches, for the early detection of Fusarium infection.
