Control Variable Optimization for a Diesel Electric Hybrid Locomotive
Nowadays, railway vehicles are being increasingly equipped with hybrid electric power-trains in order to provide significant gains in fuel economy and reductions in greenhouse gases emissions. Since hybrid power-trains are complex electromechanical systems, optimal energy management is crucial in order to achieve minimum possible fuel consumption. Having this in mind, this paper proposes an optimised real time energy management control for a diesel electric hybrid locomotive based on optimal results of dynamic programming optimization algorithm. The goal of the optimization is to minimize the fuel consumption subject to battery state-of-charge constraints and physical limits of different power-train variables. The final optimization result, expressed in terms of optimal battery state-of-charge reference (target) is used as an additional input to the state-of-charge controller of the real-time energy management system, and the resulting simulation analysis shows clear gains in terms of fuel savings of the locomotive equipped with the hybrid power-train over the conventional one.
