Groundwater quality of the Bokanjac-Poličnik catchment area near Zadar, Croatia

The springs and dug wells in the hinterland of the city of Zadar are of great importance because for many years they were the only water supply sources for the needs of the city of Zadar. During long dry seasons, they temporary came under the influence of the sea intrusion, even though some of them are more than 10 km away from the seacoast. This points to the existence of salt water under the freshwater system and conical uplifting of salt water due to over pumping. In the catchment area, there are several water facilities included in the water supply system of the city of Zadar. These are: Bokanjac, Boljkovac, Golubinka, Jezerce and Oko. Golubinka is a coastal karst spring that has a problem with salinization every summer under completely natural conditions and is used for water supply only outside the summer dry periods. Other water supply facilities in the catchment area are dug wells, of which Boljkovac and Jezerce has the problem with salinization. For the purposes of the Water Management Plan of the Republic of Croatia, the quality and quantity status and risk assessment was made. According to chemical analyses of groundwater, chlorides and sulphates are occasionally elevated on Boljkovac and Golubinka, as well as electrical conductivity on Jezerce. In accordance with the national methodology for assessing the groundwater chemical status of karstic aquifers, classification tests were performed. According to the classification tests, this body of groundwater was assessed to be in a bad status and at risk, and measures and operational monitoring were prescribed.
