Aircraft Diesel Engine - The Future of General Aviation Propulsion
Recognizing General Aviation (GA) potentials and privileges, US Goverment funded a new GA propulsion concept-NASA research on GAP-General Aviation Propulsion Program. Complementary to FAA strategic Plan and its mission: Ensuring Safe, Secure and Efficient Flight, this program is coupled with cockpit and airframe technologies development by NASA-FAA-infustry, refered to us as AGATE-Advanced General Aviation Transport Experiment consortiium. US Congress has funded in 2001. another NASA research project-SATS- Small Aircraft Transportation System. In Europe with TEN and EU Common transport Policy it is stressed to respect ecological aspect, effectieveness of transport direction management supported with applied inteligent transport systems and especially operation safety aspects. The main diference in developing new aircraft diesel engine between US and EU concept is that EU concept is based on already existing car engines and is primarily used to modify existing GA aircraft, while US concept is completely new technology diesel engine, for new composite monocoque airframe aircraft and advanced cockpit technology.
