Global Design of L1 Pencil Beams With Multiple Constraints
L1 pencil beams have monotonically decreasing sidelobes and radiate a small amount of power in the sidelobe region. Corresponding antenna coefficients have “bell-shaped” characteristics with dynamic range ratio (DRR) that spans the range between 1.84 and 11.06 in arrays having 5 to 40 elements. Even though their DRR generally takes low values, in some applications it could be too high to be realized with available beamforming networks. This problem can be solved by incorporating DRR constraints into the original optimization problem. However, constraining the DRR causes deterioration of the radiation pattern. In most cases, the level of the first sidelobe increases, whereas the adjacent sidelobes remain low. To mitigate such behavior, additional constraints are set on the sidelobe level (SLL). This work considers the design of L1 pencil beams with constrained DRR and SLL. The design utilizes branch and bound algorithm with pruning based on feasibility analysis.
